New grads and students

Start your OT career without sinking or swimming

Private practice has a reputation for throwing new grads in the deep end. We do the opposite: a month of orientation, a weekly mentor, a caseload that builds slowly, and someone to call when you're stuck. For students who haven't started an OT program yet, our scholarship helps with the cost and comes with a job at the end.

New grad support program

How your first year works

Every new graduate OT at CTC gets the same program, whichever office you join. It's built around one idea: you learn private practice faster when nobody is rushing you.

1. Orientation, about a month

You shadow experienced OTs, learn our systems and the different funders without pressure to perform, and start taking on tasks gradually with your mentor beside you.

2. Weekly structured mentorship

You're paired with an experienced OT who meets you once a week to talk through cases, review your documentation and help you build your clinical skills.

3. Professional skills mentorship

The things school doesn't teach: managing your time and workload, scheduling, communicating with clients, families and insurers, and handling billing and admin.

4. On-demand mentor support

Questions don't wait for your weekly meeting. You can call a mentor whenever you need help, so you never feel alone with a hard file.

5. A slow caseload build, over three months

After orientation your caseload grows in small steps, set by an individual development plan and regular check-ins on how ready you feel.

6. GROW: an OT coach for your career goals

Separate from your clinical mentor, an OT coach helps you set career goals, build a personal roadmap and check in on progress.

7. Rookie Rounds

A virtual peer group for new-to-practice OTs that meets every two months. It's a judgment-free space for report writing, tricky clients and all the questions you've been too embarrassed to ask. There's no such thing as a silly question.

"I relocated from Vancouver to Kelowna after graduating the MOT program... CTC was very supportive throughout this process and had provided me with relocation assistance funds to assist with additional moving costs incurred."

"Imposter syndrome is real, especially as you're trying to figure a whole new province and system! CTC has always been incredibly supportive though, and having weekly mentor check-ins... was awesome."
