The honest pitch

Why we think the north is underrated

Most OTs never seriously look north. The assumption is that it is cold, isolated and a step down from city practice. The clinicians we have up there tell a different story.

Your commute is minutes, not an hour in traffic. A house is within reach on one income. A ski hill, a river and a trailhead are all closer than the nearest big box store in the Lower Mainland. And clinically you see more variety in a month than many city OTs see in a year, because you are the OT for a wide area.

It is not for everyone. Winters are long and some clients are a few hours' drive away. But if you want autonomy, room to breathe and a mortgage you can actually carry, it is worth a real look.

Where you would live

Three communities, three different norths

Prince GeorgeThe north's largest city and its service hub, with a university, a regional hospital and an airport. From here you cover Quesnel, Vanderhoof and out toward the Peace. Nordic trails, a local ski hill and more lakes than you will get through are on your doorstep. Our Prince George office.
TerraceSet in the Skeena Valley with mountains on every side, Shames Mountain for skiing and some of the best salmon and steelhead fishing in BC. You cover Kitimat, Smithers and Prince Rupert, with the Nass Valley and Haida Gwaii further out. Our Terrace office.
Williams LakeCariboo ranch country, with lake after lake, Fox Mountain's bike trails and the Stampede every summer. You cover 100 Mile House and Quesnel. Our Williams Lake office.

What our team says about working here

“

The owners TRULY believe that happy therapists make good therapists, and they are not wrong.

"Creative Therapy Consultants was a great starting place post-graduate studies... I was treated very well and was provided with immense support when starting out as a new OT. There are also opportunities to grow within the company... They provide mentorship support as needed, they provide continuing education as you'd like, and they are very fair with referrals and hours (as much or as little as you'd like)."

Questions

Working as an OT in northern BC: common questions

How much do occupational therapists earn in northern BC with CTC?

$50 to $65 an hour depending on experience, with our higher rates paid in regional offices like Prince George, Terrace and Williams Lake. You can work as an employee or as a contractor. There is also a $2,500 sign-on bonus.

Does the B.C. Loan Forgiveness Program apply in Prince George, Terrace and Williams Lake?

All three are on the province's list of eligible underserved communities, along with Quesnel, 100 Mile House, Kitimat, Smithers, Prince Rupert and Vanderhoof. Occupational therapy is an eligible occupation. With 400 or more in-person service hours a year, 20% of your B.C. student loan is forgiven each year for up to five years. Our northern OTs already use it. Check your own eligibility with StudentAid BC before you count on it.

Do you help with relocation?

Yes. We offer relocation assistance for northern roles. Email HR and we will talk through what your move involves.

Can new graduates apply?

Yes. You get mentorship from experienced OTs across our 12 offices, so you are never practising on your own even when you are the only OT in town.

Do I need a car?

Yes. Community OT in the north means driving between towns, so you need a valid licence and a reliable vehicle.
