What a home safety assessment looks at

Aging in place is a goal for many older adults. Our OTs walk through the home and recommend practical changes, such as:

  • Lighting in hallways, stairs and entryways, including motion-sensor lights for night-time
  • Clear, uncluttered pathways and secured rugs and carpets
  • Bathroom grab bars, raised toilet seats and non-slip mats
  • Kitchen items within reach and easy-grip handles
  • Entry ramps, stairlifts and wider doorways for wheelchair users
  • Emergency response systems and medication organization

Who refers

Veterans Affairs Canada, ICBC, insurers and case managers refer older adults for aged care services. Families can also contact us directly.

Our OTs work with families, caregivers, contractors and the client's other health providers so that equipment and home changes fit the person's abilities now and as their needs change.
